Meryl Danielle Cassie was born on the 2nd April 1984 and her 20th birthday is just coming up. She was just 14 years old when filming series1 and she has grown a lot since then. She has appeared in every episode of The Tribe ever filmed, (only Caleb Ross who plays Lex has also appeared in all episodes!)
Meryl (along with her sisters Megan and Monique, Java and Siva and her brother Miquille) was born in a little town called George which is in Capetown South Africa. Due to the growing tourist moving into South Africa her family moved to Auckland New Zealand in 1987. This Is where Meryl and her family grew up.
Meryl decided that acting was for her and so at the very young age of 10 got an agent and by the time she was 11 she had appeared on New Zealand shows such as Xena, Hercules, and Shortland Street as an extra.
When Meryl was 14 years old her Agent contacted her about a new TV show called THE TRIBE that New Zealand producers Cloud 9 were hoping to make. They had offered her an audition! So Meryl travelled to Wellington to do an audition to play the character Saleen, A quiet yet friendly and motherly character who was to have a problem with depression which would then result in the illness Bulimia. She did the audition and went away feeling happy and confident. A week or so later Cloud 9 contacted her, She hadnít been given the part of Saleen! But she had been given the part of Bad chick Ebony a ruthless and evil character who is spitefull to everyone and will do what ever she wants to get wat she wants.
Meryl recons they liked her braided hair which is why she was given the part of Ebony, they make her look evil. And they clearly did like them as they kept them for five seasons.
In series 1 merylís character Ebony didnít have a very main role, she wasnít one of the mall rats although there were a good few episodes where Ebony appeared and at large as the villainess leader of the locos (after Zoot died) but from series 2 onwards Ebony look a very front and main role within the show. Even when ebony became a Mall Rat (the do-Gooding hero tribe) Ebony didnít stop her wicked ways making merylís character a very existing and well known one.
Meryl is also an amazing singer and got the chance to show off her talents for the Tribe Album Abe Messiah. (kind of like a sound track with song sung by the cast!) Meryl took lead singer roles for nearly all of the songs and was the solo singer for the tribe beginning tune The Dream Must Stay Alive. (Track 10 on the album)
Meryl also sung the series 4 and 5 end tune Tribe Spirit with her two sisters Megan and Monique who appeared for series 4/5 as Java and Siva.
Meryl has recently appeared as a guest star for one of the episodes in one of Cloud 9ís new shows called Revelations Meryl appeared in the episode ĎThe Good Samaritaní she played the part of Lucy. The show is a whole set of stories based on bible stories. The main character Jess (played by Tom Hern RAM in The Tribe) travels around meeting people and he tells the stories. Itís a little odd but its ok. Many of the episodes guest star The Tribeís cast.
Meryl Has trained at both New Zealandís Young People's Theatre and Nathan Homestead I hope this will broaden her options and help her along her path and that we may be seeing her in many more things along the way.
Following Merylís Musical talents she and her sisters have set up a small band known as The Nubian Angels. As seen in the Photo to the right. (meryl is on the left Megan in the centre and Monique on the right.)
Meryl also was part of the latest series on the New Zealand Idol. It is a reality show were members of the public go to auditions were judges decided who is in and out. There are several rounds until there are just a few finalists left they then battle it out to be the winner through public voting. The winner is then given a record deal and become pop singers of a kind. Meryl Made it to round 2.
